How is daily loss calculated?

Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The reset: midnight UTC

Every day at midnight UTC, your account sets a new baseline for the day ahead. Your daily loss limit is measured from that baseline until the next reset.

The baseline: balance or equity, whichever is higher

At the reset, we look at two numbers: your balance and your equity. The higher one becomes the baseline.

  • Open trade in profit at midnight UTC? Your equity is higher, so the baseline includes that open gain.
  • Open trade in loss? Your balance is higher, so the balance is the baseline.

A percentage of the baseline, not the account size

Your daily loss limit is your programme's percentage of the day's baseline — not of the account size you bought. On a day that starts from a $102,000 baseline, 5% is $5,100, not $5,000.

Floating P&L counts, all day

Open trades are part of the calculation, not just closed ones. A trade you haven't closed still counts towards your daily loss, and the line applies at every moment of the day: if your equity drops below it, even briefly and even if the trade recovers before the close, the account is breached.

Plan your day from the baseline, and treat open losses as already taken.

A worked example

$100K 2-Step Standard
  1. Day one. At midnight UTC, your balance and equity are both $100,000. The baseline is $100,000. With a 5% daily loss, you have $5,000 of room: the line for the day is $95,000.
  2. Later on. At midnight UTC, your balance is $100,000 and an open trade puts your equity at $102,000. The higher figure, $102,000, is the baseline. 5% of $102,000 is $5,100, so the line for the day is $96,900.
  3. Then the trade turns. It gives back its $2,000 open gain and you close at $100,000. Your balance is where it started the day, but $2,000 of the day's $5,100 is already used: $3,100 of room is left above $96,900.
  4. A dip counts. If your equity drops below $96,900 at any point that day — even for a moment, and even if the price comes back — the account is breached.

Holding trades past midnight

Overnight and weekend holding are allowed on every programme, and nothing is closed for the weekend. Just remember the reset: a winning trade carried past midnight UTC lifts the baseline, so any open gain it gives back counts against the new day.

If you go past the limit

Going past the daily loss at any point in the day closes the account. That's the only consequence: no penalty beyond the closed account, and your other accounts keep running.

Your next step depends on the account:

  • Evaluation with Free Retry: use your one retry.
  • Pay After Pass: reset the account for 40% of the programme fee.
  • Any account: start a new challenge whenever you're ready.
